Democrat candidate Joe Biden, the winner of the US presidential election, has not yet officially taken power. But in the meantime, the division between the left and the center of the party has become the cause of his headache. Progressives claim they have a key role to play in Trump’s defeat in this election. In recognition of that role, they want to see people known as progressives in Biden’s cabinet. At the top of the list is Senator Bernie Sanders, known as the Democratic Socialist.
Rumors have been circulating for a long time that Sanders wants to be in charge of the labor ministry. He made the claim in an interview with CNN on Tuesday. He said he was ready to help the Biden administration succeed. His work will be reminded to protect the interests of the working class of this country. Asked if he was interested in taking charge of the Labor Department, Sanders said, “I will fight for the working class. If I am given any responsibility, I will accept it.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Sanders, the most vocal voice in the progressive part of the Democratic Party, supports this claim. He said before the election that it would be important for Sanders to be included in his cabinet if Biden wins. There is no doubt that the workers’ union will also support the proposal. But there are many within the Democratic Party who oppose all forms of socialist ideology. Some of them say that one of the reasons why Democrats lost control of the Senate and lost six seats in the House of Representatives is because Trump was so successful in imposing the banner of socialism on them. Some have pointed the finger at Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez for the disaster.
The left-right conflict was revealed at an internal meeting of Democratic members in Congress shortly after the election results were announced. Abigail Spanberger, a congressman who considered the televised meeting moderate, angrily blamed the party’s progressives for the election crisis. He warned that no one should forget the word ‘socialism’ or ‘socialist’ and then we will have to lose the 2022 elections.
That’s what Democrat whip-burner Jim Cliburn says. He urged that no one speak of socialism in the January 5 re-election to Georgia’s two Senate seats. He doesn’t think conservative Georgia can win by canceling police budgets or demanding socialist health care.
Democrat moderate congressman Jeffrey Ocasio-Cortez, a member of Congress, said without naming names, “We can’t win by talking about socialism.” We want to win, we don’t want internet celebrities. ‘
The progressive part of the party is not silent on this criticism of the moderates. Promita Jaipal, Rashida Talib and Ocasio-Cortez protested sternly, saying the moderates were “more concerned with keeping white people happy” than with working people’s interests. Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged that he was the main target of the moderate onslaught, saying that he was an “enemy” to the group. In an interview with CNN, he said it was highly irresponsible to blame only progressives for the election results. There are conflicts within the party, it is not wise to pour petrol in this way.
The problem for Biden is that since the election campaign he has moved away from his previous moderate stance to a more progressive one. Despite opposing government-controlled health insurance, he has recognized healthcare as a human right under pressure from the left, proposed increased income taxes on the superpowers, and voted in favor of the eco-friendly New Green Day proposed by Ocasio-Cortez. None of this will be accepted in the face of Republican resistance in the Senate. As a result, Biden will have to find a way to continue his rule. In doing so, he may have to read the copanle of the progressives.
